News - September 2017

The beginning of 2017-2018 school year has brought us a lot of excitement with a Solar Eclipse on the first day of school, Hurricane on Friday, and flooding starting the second week.  Through all this, our staff has shown resolve by maintaining a great learning environment for our students.  The new school year offers us amazing opportunities to make a difference in the lives of our students and I am looking forward to the year ahead.

With these opportunities brings a great deal of excitement to parents and students. Our staff have been working hard to make sure the excitement extends from Day One through the end of the year. Our focus for the start of the year is developing a learning environment that is warm and inviting with a strong focus on academics.  This focus is fully aligned with our new goals, Vision, and Mission statements.  I feel our Vision Statement says it best:

Leon ISD will prepare all students for tomorrow’s challenges by instilling

confidence, persistence, kindness, good judgment, respect for the law,

and a lifetime love of learning.

The implementation of a Curriculum that is aligned with the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills(TEKS) has been our main focus to start the school year.  Our principals and teachers have spent time over the summer engaged in professional development, perfecting their skills in order to provide the best for our students.

In addition, we have started to address the financial difficulties that our district has incurred due to the elimination of ASATR funding.  This funding accounted for more than 30% of our overall budget for the past 10 years.  Even though, Leon ISD has reduced its expenditures by more than $1,000,000 for 2017-2018 we still had to adopt a $1.6 million dollar deficit budget.  This summer the state legislature approved Hardship Grants to assist districts that lost funding due to the elimination of ASATR.  This grant will provide relief for Leon ISD and time for the district to further adjust its expenditures.

The start of a new school year gives us a renewed sense of hope and enthusiasm as we work together insuring that each child receives the best education possible. I look forward to working beside you as we continue making Leon ISD the best district in Texas.

Sincerely,

David Rains
